The Duke and the King - The Morning That I Get to Hell
I’m really enjoying this album. It’s a side project of Simone Felice, of the Felice Brothers.
Where’s all my fire, my famous missionary zeal?
For my New York friends, they’re playing the Bowery Ballroom with A.A. Bondy tomorrow night.
Peculiar Gentlemen - Single Ladies (Beyoncé)
Here’s a fun cover of Beyoncé’s Single Ladies. Thanks to Cover Me for the find.
Frightened Rabbit - The Twist (Daytrotter Session)
Frightened Rabbit did their second Daytrotter session a week ago. Four great tracks including this version of The Twist.
Some irony in the fact that I can use a wonderful Tumblr feature (reblogging) to work around another “feature” I just complained about. I wasn’t able to post my song today, but here it is … as a reblog.
The Twist (Daytrotter Sessions) by Frightened Rabbit
“Frightened Rabbit records sound like rainy day weepings that aren’t at all depressing or too bleak. There’s actually green grass and clouds opening up in slivers in the songs on The Midnight Organ Fight, that create the illusion that all that was needed was venting and time to distract him from anything getting too overcoming or harmful.” —Sean Moeller
original version appears on The Midnight Organ Fight (via)
Bob Dylan - Must Be Santa
It is December 1st, but still a little early for me for Christmas songs. But I saw this this morning and couldn’t resist sharing.
Pearl Jam - Unthought Known
I haven’t spent any time with the new Pearl Jam album yet, but I like this one.
Joe Jackson - One More Time
The Cult’s She Sells Sanctuary is making the rounds this morning, so I thought I’d chime in with another old one.
Joe Jackson’s Look Sharp was one of my big albums growing up. I have to confess that I only come back to it now because the song’s being featured in a TV ad (Taco Bell?). Oh well. Still a great song and a great album.
Be Good Tanyas - When Doves Cry (Prince)
My Friday cover song. The wonderful Be Good Tanyas take on a Prince tune.
Frightened Rabbit - Heads Roll Off
It’s always a good time for some Frightened Rabbit. Two guitars, no bass … and still that big, full sound.
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Carries On
Great song. Stick with it if you’re not familiar with the band. Always better in the context of the full album.
Did everybody but me see these guys at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC last night? Fred, Bijan, Joanne, Whitney, Mo, who else? Feel like the only person besides me who wasn’t there was David Noel … and he was busy seeing Mumford & Sons in Berlin. Live music is one of the biggest things I miss not living in a big city.
The National - Lit Up
I have to reblog anybody that says “When in doubt, listen to The National.”
When in doubt, listen to The National. Auto-reblog.
The National - Lit Up (posted by pile)
Mumford & Sons - White Blank Page
One more from this amazing album. I love the rage in the middle of the song.
Mumford & Sons - Awake My Soul
I am loving this album more and more. Here’s a great Sunday morning tune.
The Postal Service - The District Sleeps Alone Tonight
I’m listening to All Songs Considered and they’re doing The Decade in Music Defined. They just played this song. It’s a fave of mine, so I thought I’d post it.
We’ve had lots of good music from Ben Gibbard since 2003, but I would love to see another Postal Service album.
The Decemberists - The Wanting Comes in Waves / Repaid
Given how much I like The Decemberists and how much I loved The Crane Wife, I can’t really explain why I’ve been slow to pick up on their latest album, The Hazards of Love. I’ve had it since it was released, but haven’t really given it a good listen.
But Ethan’s tweet yesterday has me listening today and I’m loving it. It’s a big, ambitious album. Worth spending some time with it.
The Avett Brothers - The Perfect Space (live performance on Spinner’s The Interface)
Wow! This is an incredible performance. The Avett Brothers I and Love and You is a strong contender for my favourite album of ‘09. But Rick Rubin’s sparse production strips away the Avett’s to their bare essentials. This video shows what they can do if you let them plug in and set up a drum kit.
I need to see these guys live.
The Interface has a great looking library of live performances. But why do they geo-block us Canadians out? Arrgghh. Oddly, I can see these Avett Brothers vids, but not others.
Thanks to ECEU for the pointer.
The Antlers - Two
I hate to tip my hand here, but this is the album of the year. Full stop.
