Wow! This is an incredible performance. The Avett Brothers I and Love and You is a strong contender for my favourite album of ‘09. But Rick Rubin’s sparse production strips away the Avett’s to their bare essentials. This video shows what they can do if you let them plug in and set up a drum kit.

I need to see these guys live.

The Interface has a great looking library of live performances. But why do they geo-block us Canadians out? Arrgghh. Oddly, I can see these Avett Brothers vids, but not others.

Thanks to ECEU for the pointer.

Ben Harper - The Drugs Don’t Work (The Verve)

I’m loving Mumford & Sons album Sigh No More.

Why do I do this? I somehow miss or ignore a recommendation from one “music friend” that I trust. But then react to another one. David Noel (and I think others) pointed us to these guys back in September. But it was Bijan’s post of Roll Away Your Stone a few days ago that made me listen to the song and then buy the album. Oh well. I’m on it now. Heavy rotation the last 3 days. Had a hard time picking a song from the 12 wonderful ones that make up this album.

Cracker (w/ Patterson Hood) - Friends

This is wonderful. Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers) playing Friends with Cracker. Friends is from Cracker’s latest album, Sunrise in the Land of Milk and Honey.

“Friends” is an earnest and amusing ode on the airtight bonds of a pair of drinking buddies.

I love Cracker, but haven’t given this album much of a listen. Will have to revisit it.

A while back I posted video from The National’s appearance on CBC’s Q. But I missed this gem: Aaron Dessner giving a couple little guitar tips for how to play Fake Empire and Slow Show.

One thing that always strikes my about The National’s music is the rhythm. Many of their songs seem off just a little bit, but in a beautiful, perfect kinda way. Aaron shows how he plays Fake Empire using two rhythms simultaneously (one with the thumb, one with the index finger). Maybe this is standard stuff for a half-decent guitar player. I’m poor-to-mediocre and I simply don’t have the coordination to handle this.

Found over at Heather’s blog.

Florence & The Machine on Letterman

Still a great video, one of U2’s best songs, and one of the best album openings ever. Sure, Bono’s full of himself, but that’s Bono. The real star of this song is Edge. That guitar sound gets me every time.

finermac:

If you’re ever looking through a website that you found from a Google search, but are having a hard time finding the relevant part of the page, try this:

Perform a Google search in the Safari toolbar.

Click a link in the results page.

Press Command+G.

Voilá! With one command Safari will find the first word of your search term in the page for you, making it much easier to find the part you were actually searching for. If you continue to press Command+G, it will find the next occurence of your first search term word.
